Migrate from Magento to Shopify

Magento, now Adobe Commerce, is powerful, and that power has a price. It needs a dedicated server, a technical team keeping it current, and a development budget that never really ends. When Magento 1 reached end of life, many stores were forced to move whether they wanted to or not, and a good number used that moment to jump straight to Shopify rather than take on another technical migration inside the same ecosystem.

It is the source platform we have worked with most, and also the one that punishes you hardest if you treat the migration as a database dump. It is not one.

Where a Magento migration is won or lost

  • Attributes and configurable products. Magento lets you build catalogues with a depth of attributes Shopify does not replicate natively. Before anything moves, you have to decide which attributes become variants, which become metafields, and which should simply be dropped because they were never used for filtering or selling.
  • Multi-store and multi-website. If you run several stores or markets from one Magento installation, you need a plan for how that translates into Shopify Markets or separate stores, because the data model is not one to one.
  • Custom integrations. Magento stores usually have bespoke connections to ERP, PIM, logistics or B2B systems. Each one needs reviewing separately. Some have a direct Shopify app equivalent, others need a custom connection built.
  • URLs and accumulated SEO. Magento generates URL structures that depend heavily on how each store was configured. With a large catalogue, the 301 redirect map is the single most time-consuming piece, and the one you notice most when it is done badly. A store with years of authority in Google can lose much of that work within weeks if the redirects are wrong.

This is a well-worn path

Brands including Pompeii, Panama Jack, Toni Pons, Gobik, Castañer and The Animals Observatory have already left Magento for Shopify. The pattern repeats. These were established catalogues where the problem was never selling more, it was that maintaining the infrastructure cost more than it returned.

How we handle it

We begin with a genuine technical audit of your current Magento: which attributes are actually used, which integrations are critical, and which are leftovers from years ago. From there we decide with you what migrates as is, what gets simplified, and what gets left behind. We migrate catalogue, customers and orders into a staging environment, build the redirect map, and review the result before production is touched, exactly as thoroughly as if the store were ours.

Want to know what drives cost in your case or how long a migration this size takes? Tell us how your Magento is set up and we will tell you where to start.

If you are still weighing the decision itself, we compared both platforms in Shopify vs Magento.
